Aswan, the gateway to Nubia

Aswan is where the Nile is at its most beautiful: the river narrows between granite boulders and islands, and white felucca sails cross in front of the desert dunes of the West Bank. Here stands the Temple of Isis at Philae, dismantled and rebuilt on Agilkia Island during the UNESCO rescue campaign of the 1960s and 70s.

Our programmes include the High Dam, completed in 1970, the Unfinished Obelisk in the ancient granite quarries and, on many itineraries, a visit to a Nubian village with its brightly painted houses. Aswan is also the starting point for the excursion to Abu Simbel and for Lake Nasser cruises.
