Visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum with Ledo Tours

Two kilometres from the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation. For the first time, the entire treasure of Tutankhamun — the golden mask, the thrones, the chariots and the nested coffins, more than 5,000 objects — is displayed together, in galleries designed around the story of the boy king and the discovery of his tomb in 1922.

The visit begins in the Grand Hall under the 83-tonne statue of Ramesses II and climbs the Grand Staircase, lined with kings, gods and sarcophagi, to a window that frames the pyramids of Giza. Our Egyptologist guides know the collection gallery by gallery, and we book timed entry tickets in advance so you do not queue.

How much time to plan

Allow at least three to four hours for the Grand Staircase and the Tutankhamun galleries, or a full day to add the main chronological galleries. On most of our itineraries the museum is combined with the Pyramids and the Sphinx on the same day, or given a day of its own.

Other museums on your journey

Many travellers pair the GEM with the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and its Royal Mummies Hall, the historic Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, the Luxor Museum or the Nubian Museum in Aswan. Ask us and we will add them to any programme.
