Before you go into the desert
- Season: October to April. Days are pleasant, but desert nights in winter can be close to freezing, so pack a warm layer.
- Distances: the Bahariya Oasis, gateway to the Black and White Deserts, is about 370 kilometres south-west of Cairo; Siwa is much further west.
- Camping: nights in the White Desert are spent in simple camps; bring a head torch and expect basic facilities.
- Pairing: these routes combine well with a Nile cruise, so you see both the river valley and the desert.
