Temples and river in the first half, open desert in the second. This trip leaves on Fridays with a special flight to Aswan, where you board a three-night cruise sailing north to Luxor, with Philae, Kom Ombo, Edfu, the Valley of the Kings and Karnak along the way.

From Luxor you fly to Cairo, and the next morning a 4x4 takes you west into the Sahara. You cross the Black Desert, stop at Crystal Mountain and reach the White Desert in time for sunset, when its wind-carved chalk formations turn pink and gold. Dinner is cooked over the fire and you sleep at a camp under one of the clearest skies in Egypt.

Back in Cairo, a final guided morning at the Pyramids and the Sphinx rounds off the trip.

  • A night at a desert camp in the White Desert
  • 4x4 crossing of the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain
  • Three nights on the Nile from Aswan to Luxor
  • Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Edfu and Philae
  • The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx
Day 1 Arrival in Aswan and embarkation

Landing in Aswan, the southern gateway of ancient Egypt. After meeting our team at the airport you transfer to the ship, which stays moored on the granite-lined riverbank tonight. Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 2 Aswan, Philae and Kom Ombo

Morning visits in Aswan: the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and the island temple of Philae. After lunch the ship sails north to Kom Ombo, where you visit the double temple of Sobek and Haroeris by evening light.

Day 3 Edfu and sailing to Luxor

Early visit to the Temple of Horus at Edfu, reached by horse-drawn carriage. The rest of the day is spent sailing north, through the lock at Esna, with time to read on the sun deck and watch rural Egypt go by. Arrival in Luxor in the evening.

Day 4 Luxor and flight to Cairo

Disembark after breakfast and visit the highlights of Luxor: the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon and Karnak. In the evening, transfer to the airport for the short flight to Cairo and check-in at your hotel.

Day 5 Into the Black and White Deserts by 4x4

Early departure from Cairo to the Bahariya Oasis, where you switch to a 4x4 with a local guide. Drive through the Black Desert, stop at Crystal Mountain and reach the White Desert in time for sunset among its chalk sculptures. Bedouin dinner and night at a desert camp.

Day 6 Sunrise in the White Desert and return to Cairo

Wake up early to watch the sun rise over the white rocks; few places in Egypt are this silent. After breakfast at camp, drive back through Bahariya to Cairo. Check-in at your hotel.

Day 7 The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx

The day you have been waiting for. Your guide takes you to the plateau of Giza to see the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure up close, then to the panoramic viewpoint where all three line up against the desert. Finish at the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Khafre. Afternoon free.

Optional: entry inside a pyramid (extra ticket) or an afternoon at Saqqara and Memphis.

Day 8 Departure from Cairo

Breakfast and, depending on your flight time, a last coffee in the city. Transfer to Cairo airport with assistance for your flight home.
