At the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh combines long beaches with coral reefs that begin a few metres from the shore. Ras Mohammed National Park, where the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba meet, is one of the most celebrated dive sites in the world. Sharm is a one-hour flight from Cairo, which makes it an easy extension to any Nile programme.
Planning a stay in Sharm El Sheikh
Sharm works all year: winter days are mild and sunny, and the sea stays warm enough for snorkelling for most of the year. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, while July and August are hot.
- Underwater: Ras Mohammed National Park, protected since 1983, and the reefs of the Strait of Tiran are the classic boat trips.
- Inland: Mount Sinai and St Catherine’s Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are a few hours’ drive away; the traditional climb starts at night to reach the summit for sunrise.
- Combine it with: a Nile cruise or a few days in Cairo; the flight from Cairo takes about an hour.
