Luxor, ancient Thebes

For almost five centuries Luxor — ancient Thebes — was the religious capital of Egypt, and no other place on earth concentrates so many monuments. On the East Bank, the Temple of Karnak covers more than 200 acres; its Great Hypostyle Hall alone holds 134 giant columns. Luxor Temple, linked to Karnak by the restored Avenue of Sphinxes, is at its most beautiful after dark.

The West Bank was the city of the dead: the Valley of the Kings with its painted royal tombs, the terraced temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon. At sunrise, hot air balloons drift over the whole valley — one of the most memorable experiences in Egypt.
